Liberia Special Wildlife Unit seized live animals, including endangered crocodiles

On July 6, 2023, the Liberia Special Wildife Investigation Unit (SWIU) undertook an operation that resulted in the seizure of 7 crocodiles and 2 monkeys. Acting on information that the animals were being collected for sale to zoos, the SWIU executed a search warrant on the home of a high profile District Chairman who had the live animals in his possession. In addition to 4 dwarf crocodiles and 2 sooty mangabey monkeys, the SWIU also seized 3 female West Africa Slender-snouted crocodiles, a critically endangered species in Africa. The animals were taken to the Libassa Animal Sanctuary where they will be cared for. It is anticipated that the endangered crocodiles will be released into the wild in hopes of adding to an already declining population. Despite agressive resistence from the public, the suspect was arrested and transported from the scene.
