Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit’s Operation Bencubbin Leads to Arrest of Elephant Ivory Traffickers

On February 6, 2024, a successful multi-agency operation spearheaded by the Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit (UWCU) culminated in the apprehension of two individuals involved in trafficking elephant ivory near Murchinson Falls National Park. Acting on intelligence, UWCU operatives initiated contact with the traffickers and arranged to purchase approximately 26 kg of ivory. Upon the arrival of the contraband via motorcycle, the suspects were promptly arrested. Alongside the arrests, law enforcement authorities seized both the ivory and the motorcycle, further denting the illegal wildlife trade in the region.
